Working Waterfront: North Haven's affordable housing in high gear

An $840,000 MaineHousing grant, Genesis Fund gap financing, three apartments plus an accessory unit going all-electric, and 18 applicants for the first three. The Island Institute's paper checks in on NHSH.

The Working Waterfront's July 2024 report covered the busiest stretch in NHSH's history:

  • NHSH won the maximum $840,000 from MaineHousing's Affordable Housing Initiative for Maine Islands, a 0% forgivable loan with a 45-year affordability covenant, and gap funding from the Genesis Community Loan Fund.
  • The money builds three two- and three-bedroom apartments and a 200-square-foot accessory unit, all-electric with heat pumps.
  • Eighteen households applied for the first three units.
  • The Fish Hawk Road ownership project on South Shore Road was moving toward construction.
